Gianfranco Puoti
Director and Principal Investigator
Email:gianfranco.puoti@unicampania.it
Department:Department of Advanced Medical and Surgical Sciences
University:University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”
Country:Italy
Biography:
Gianfranco Puoti Today Dr. Puoti is clinical and scientific Director of the Regional Human Prion Diseases Diagnosis and Surveillance Centre and Director of the Center for Cognitive Disorders and Dementias (CDCD), at Department of Advanced Medical and Surgical Sciences of University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Italy. Over the last fifteen years, Dr. Puoti focused his research activity on the study of phenotype-genotype correlations in prion diseases and prion strains phenomena.
He first reported the co-occurrence of different types of PrPSc in the same brain of sporadic Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (Puoti G. et al. Neurology 1999), and familial Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (Puoti G. et al. Annals of Neurology 2000). In that direction, he subsequently demonstrated that different PrPSc types induce different microglial activation in Creutzfeld- Jakob Disease (Puoti G. et al. J Neuropath Exp Neurol 2005), suggesting that different conformers of the same protein cause neurodegeneration through different pathogenic pathways.
Recently he demonstrated that tau in cerebro-spinal fluid is superior to 14-3-3 protein as a marker in the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease (Hamlin et al. Neurology 2012) and characterized a novel prion disease named “Variable Proteinase Sensitive Prionopathy (VPSPr)” (Zou WQ et al. Ann Neurol 2010). All the studies of Dr. Puoti are used to combine clinical features, neuropathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology. 1998-2001: Research Fellow at Division of Neuropathology, National Neurological Institute “Carlo Besta”, Milan, Italy Advisor: Orso Bugiani, M.D. – Principal Investigator: Frabrizio Tagliavini M.D March 2001- July 2008: Principal Investigator at Neurobiopathology Laboratory, Department of Neurological Sciences, Second University of Naples, Italy Advisor: Roberto Cotrufo M.D. July 2008-August 2010:
